In Mexico, a new breed of destinations is putting Cancun and other sprawling cities to shame. We discover Mexican cool far from the madding crowds.

Dos Casas, San Miguel de Allende: Colonial cool

San Miguel is a real gem. Peaceful and picturesque, the little town is set in the mountainous centre of the country. Dating back to 1542, it’s a culture buff’s paradise and everything you’d expect from a sleepy Mexican town: dazzling yellows and earthy toned walls set against quiet cobblestone streets.

When Catherine Zeta Jones visited, she stayed at the charming Dos Casas. The tiny 5 room hotel is a designer haven tucked away in the sleepy streets. Abiding by the ‘mi casa, su casa’ principle, the cosy yet chic hotel is absurdly welcoming, and even has a kitchen, where you can help yourself in the fridge. The perfect siesta hideaway, the Del Balcon room comes with a fireplace, neutral tones and pristine orchids. If you prefer a room with a view, book the La Terraza room, it overlooks the colourful city, and has its own Jacuzzi: bliss!

W Mexico City: Hip & Hot

There’s more to Mexico city than a huge, polluted metropolis. It is a thriving city with plenty to see and its quota of trendy hotspots. For a touch of culture visit Frida Kahlo’s blue house in Coyoacán, now a tribute museum and to get a better overall view, head to the Castillo de Chapultepec. The castle is a reminder of changing eras from Aztec to colonial, and now houses the national history museum too.

In the city’s Polanco district, at the corner of the ultra chic Campos Eliseos is the W Hotel, and the hottest nightspot in the city: the Whiskey bar. Without a doubt the city’s hippest and swankiest bar, it has an interior koi carp pond, sleek staff and clientele to match. As for the cherry red designer bedrooms they have unusual bathrooms with views and hammocks to boot!

El Tamarindo, Manzanillo: Sea, Sun & Sand

Getting away from the ‘rest of the world’ isn’t easy. But, at the El Tamarindo, a lost eden on the Costa Careyes of Mexico, an hour south of Puerto Vallerta, it’s possible.

The pebbled driveway snakes on through 2,040 acres of lush private rainforest stretching down to the Pacific coast. An unspoiled haven, it’s home to 150 species of birds as well as the friendly Coati mundi.

Privacy is paramount. Hidden from prying eyes, thatched villas with plunge pools and hammocks are dotted throughout the resort. It’s like being in the jungle but with all creatures and comforts! At night, the turn down service brings romantic tea lights to the terrace for a fairytale atmosphere.

Hotelito Desconocido, Cruz de Loreto: Eco heaven

If you are looking for the ultimate in stylish eco-friendly: this has to be it. The Hotelito Desconocido is a disconnected haven for nature lovers, set in a huge bird and turtle reserve in the wetlands, between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

There’s a touch of magic in the air as guests are rowed from the main hotel’s lodge across the estuary to their beachside huts, where cacti defiantly poke out of the sand. The colorful rooms are basic yet absolutely charming. Without electricity, the only luxuries are a shower, sink and toilet, as well as a mosquito netted bed. Turn down service here involves dozens of tea lights and lanterns glowing in the dark, and in lieu of room service, you can hoist a flag up outside your window for delivery of fresh Mexican coffee and cookies before breakfast. Definitely different and very romantic!

Las Ventanas, Los Cabos: The A-list hideaway

Los Cabos, wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez has been one of Hollywood’s favourite hideaway since the 1940’s. And Las Ventanas is one of today’s hot escapes for those ‘in the know’.

A spectacularly plush resort, attention to detail is their everything. The interiors are reminiscent of chic and understated hacienda style, complete with marble bathrooms, flagstones and cosy fireplaces, as well as all the latest technology, and telescopes for star-gazing. The view across the Sea of Cortez from the bean shaped pool is pure luxury. Spotless white parasols and the bubbling hot tub are set against the infinity pool and the beach beyond.

To really live it up star-style, charter the resort’s yacht for a day’s outing. Seriously glamorous, it’s a fantastic way to spend a day out on the sea, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, sightseeing and relaxing.
