What is a honeymoon?

A honeymoon is the vacation a newlywed couple takes after their wedding. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honeymoon was first used in 1546 to refer to 'the idea that the first month of marriage is the sweetest.' The meaning of the honeymoon has changed since its first usage. Nowadays, a honeymoon refers to that first vacation where couples getaway from their busy lives and have intimate times after their wedding. Couples are making it unique to their own circumstances.

Some couples do what is often seen as a traditional honeymoon - leave after the wedding to some exotic resort. Some can't leave right away, so maybe wait a couple weeks or even a year to take a honeymoon. Some couples do a backpacking honeymoon and spend all summer in Europe traveling from country to country. Some do a mini-moon and just getaway someone local for a weekend. Some couples do a friendmoon and vacation with their closest friends. Some choose their favorite activity or sport and center their honeymoon around it. This could be scuba diving, biking, fine dining, skiing, sailing, or whatever is your special activity. The important thing to remember is that you are celebrating your marriage and spending time together. Do whatever it is that you love and that makes your love each other a little more!
